Lampton Services celebrates national recycling week

Lampton Services celebrates national recycling week - Business marks 6th anniversary

Ahead of National Recycling Week (16 – 22 October 2023), Lampton Services is celebrating a rise in recycling in Hounslow over the last year. The business marks its sixth anniversary this month, with 145,000 tonnes of material recycled since its launch.

In addition to being more environmentally friendly, increased food waste recycling is also cost-efficient for the Council. For every tonne of food waste diverted from refuse bins, Hounslow Council saves approximately £100, enabling more money to be reinvested into the local community.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution within the borough, Lampton Services has also introduced an electric van into its fleet. This follows Lampton Services’ Commercial Recycling and Waste Collection business transitioning its collection truck from diesel to HVO fuel earlier this year, delivering 90% carbon savings. In addition, the business’ Materials Handling Facility, which processes over 22,000 tonnes of recycling each year, is powered solely by renewable energy.

Since launching in July 2022, Lampton Services’ rapidly expanding Commercial Waste business has diverted 545 tonnes of waste from landfill, with recycling (food, cardboard and glass) representing over 35% of the business’ collections. Within a year, the Commercial Waste business increased its customer count more than 20-fold, helping Hounslow’s businesses to improve their sustainability credentials and reduce the carbon impact of their waste and recycling.

Dan Smyth, Director of Recycling & Sustainability at Lampton Services, says: “We are proud to be supporting Hounslow’s local community by making recycling solutions simpler and more accessible. The rise we are seeing in Hounslow’s recycling reflects a joint effort from our team, local residents and local businesses to create a greener borough, in line with the Council’s sustainability goals.”

Councillor Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Health Integration says: “I am proud of the service Hounslow Council delivers through Lampton Services, which has allowed us to provide uninterrupted service throughout the pandemic, with collection rates of above 99.9% which I find astonishingly impressive.

“Our recycling rate has risen sharply over the previous six years, and the new commercial offer is a big hit among our local businesses, helping us to improve the look of our streets. We completely avoid landfill and give our residents a service of the highest reliability and quality.  All our services are very cost-efficient, with any savings in dividends being returned entirely to the Council, and reinvested back into our services.”

Throughout National Recycling Week, the London Borough of Hounslow is running an informative campaign to educate residents about the importance of recycling. Lampton Services Recycle features throughout the campaign, and the business is joining the Council in encouraging Hounslow’s community to recycle more both during National Recycling Week and in the long-term.
